Kendall might be the highest paid model in the world, Gigi might be the face of multiple industries, Bella might lead fashion week, but we are watching Slick Woods.
Slick, whose real name is Simone Thompson, has played a major role in carrying the Instagirl movement. Rihanna’s prodigy and the face of her many business ventures is something now overlooked in the fashion industry: interesting. She is bald, her eyebrows vary color weekly, she has a machine gun tattoo in below her breasts. She is beautiful, she is funny, and is currently redefining beauty. When you type “beauty” into Google, a picture of Woods appears.
She opened for Jeremy Scott during this year’s New York Fashion Week and also attended the Black Panther premier (in her usual sunglasses, layered jewelry, and Fenty Beauty’s Matte Moiselle). She works avidly with Marc Jacobs. She does everything other models do, but she adds personality.
It is hard to look at some models in the industry today and actually enjoy their work. A majority of models seem to fear change -- something Slick welcomes with open arms. Woods changes her style, does a wide range of campaigns, is funny and creative. How many models can you say you can relate to? How many models can you say are changing the game?
It is extremely hard for models to be organic and evolve, yet Slick makes it look effortless. We’re impatiently waiting for her to stop being overlooked and to be taken for what she is: boss.
